" Lovely cottage, great views and fabulous walks "

Curlew Cottage is situated in the heart of Swaledale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The Yorkshire Dales has been designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is a favourite destination for walkers, cyclists, horseriders and those who simply want to explore the lovely area.

Swaledale is one of the northernmost dales. Its breathtaking scenery is unending as it follows the meandering River Swale – England’s fastest flowing river. Its gentle slopes, stunning haymeadows, historic barns and miles of drystone walls only add to its attraction.

Pretty villages abound

Swaledale is made up of numerous picture postcard villages and hamlets. The capital of Swaledale is Reeth, which is approximately 4 miles from Curlew Cottage. The history of Reeth stretches back to Saxon times. In more recent times it was the centre for the local hand knitting and local lead mining industries. Now Reeth is a picturesque village, with a large green as its focal point. Reeth is popular with visitors due to its many tea rooms, local inns, craft shops, and its proximity to the River Swale where you can go for pleasant walks.

Elsewhere within Swaledale there are the villages of Gunnerside, Muker, Thwaite and Keld. From Gunnerside you can walk to Gunnerside Gill which is a popular walk up the hill past the old lead mine workings with paths through the moor and woodlands with extensive views of the surrounding area. The villages have various inns and tea rooms, perfect for recharging your batteries following a day’s exploring.

Elsewhere in the local area there are the attractive market towns of Richmond and Leyburn. Richmond is approximately 15 miles away and has many shops, pubs and tearooms. Its skyline is dominated by the historic Richmond Castle which overlooks the River Swale. In neighbouring Wensleydale there is the equally attractive and thriving market town of Leyburn. This is home to a good range of traditional shops. It is also home to Middleham Castle, which again offers spectacular views from England’s biggest keep. While in Leyburn you can also enjoy watching collectable teapots being made at The Teapottery.

Other attractions in the surrounding area include Bolton Castle and nearby Aysgarth Falls with its delightful wooded walks and spectacular views and Hardraw Force which is England’s highest unbroken waterfall. It is also possible to visit the areas made famous in TV and film sets – such as Wharfedale made famous in the film Calendar Girls and Askrigg made famous by All Creatures Great and Small. You can also visit The World of James Herriott in Thirsk. The Yorkshire Dales are also associated with ITV’s Emmerdale and the Hollywood film Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves.

For those who enjoy learning about the local area, there are many museums in the Yorkshire Dales including the Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes, Swaledale Museum in Reeth and Richmondshire Museum in Richmond.

Further afield, you will find the historical cities of Durham and York. Both cities are within easy reach of Curlew Cottage and make an ideal day out. York is dominated by York Minster, which is the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe. York also contains, amongst its many attractions, the National Railway Museum (free admission), York Minster and the Jorvik Viking Centre.

Durham is another beautiful city and well worth a visit. It has many shops and restaurants. Its varied attractions include the cathedral and a castle. There is also the chance to go for a trip along the river and admire the stunning city views.

We can guarantee that if you visit the Yorkshire Dales then you will never be short of ideas for things to do and places to see. The attractions that we have mentioned are but a taster of what is available. A comprehensive selection of leaflets is available in the cottage. We feel sure that you will wish to visit the Yorkshire Dales again and again.
